Health promotion is a behavioral social science that draws from the biological, environmental, psychological, physical, and medical sciences to positively influence health behavior of individuals and communities; living and work conditions that influence health; and prevent disease, disability, and premature death through education-driven voluntary behavior change.
The first is a curriculum designed to prepare students to teach health and physical education in the school system. This emphasis includes a student teaching experience and instructional certification for grades P-12 in the state of Georgia. Currently Georgia requires that schools provide health and physical education instruction for each year K-5 and that health and physical education courses be made available to students in grades 6-12. This presents many job opportunities in the state.
Ellen Evans, a professor of kinesiology and director of UGA’s Center for Physical Activity and Health, empowers students to model healthy movement behaviors and motivate others through education and social support in their families, schools, workplaces and communities.
The Health and Physical Education major at UGA develops instructional techniques to improve bodily motor coordination, physical fitness, and physical activity. Pedagogical skills and content knowledge includes biomechanics, physiology, kinesiology, wellness, strategy and teamwork development, and others. Dr. Laing is a Clinical Associate Professor and Director of Dietetics. Her research projects focus on osteoporosis and obesity prevention and related health outcomes. Her expertise is in the area of imaging techniques for assessment of bone health and body composition and employing dietary and physical activity interventions to optimize the health and wellbeing of children. This year, she was honored with the Outstanding Dietetic Educator Award from the Nutrition and Dietetic Educators and Preceptors, Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
