Invisible Man Analysis Essay by R C on Prezi

Until last week, I thought I knew the full history of research on inattentional blindness. Inattentional blindness is the failure to notice a fully-visible but unexpected object or event when you are focusing attention on something else. I’ve been conducting research on the topic since the late 1990s, and I thought I was familiar with all of the work that came before mine. I knew all about Ulric Neisser’s work in the 1970s on selective looking, including many of his unpublished studies from that era. I knew about the dichotic listening studies that partially motivated his research. I knew about Arien Mack and Irv Rock’s groundbreaking studies during the 1990s on inattentional blindness in simplified computer displays (their book gave the phenomenon its scientific name). I knew about studies of tunnel vision in pilots as well as the literature on focused attention and distraction that provides a mechanistic explanation for what we see and what we miss.

The reason he does this is to emphasize his insignificance especially to the white people as a black man.

In college, he is inspired to achieve as much as Dr. Bledsoe, the college dean. However, he is expelled by the dean after he shows Mr. Norton, a wealthy white man who donates to the college, the seedy parts of the town that are inhabited by the poor and mostly uncivilized black people. After the expulsion he becomes so broke that he has to take a job in a paint factory. Here, he has an accident that causes him to be hospitalized. While in hospital, the doctors conduct shock treatments on him that leave him disoriented. After he leaves the hospital, he faints on his way to his house and is taken to the house of a kind woman named Mary where he lives until he gets a job with the Brotherhood party, a communist movement. During a riot in Harlem, he falls into a manhole and decides to get away from the political upheaval, betrayal and distress by moving underground, to the basement of an all-white building. In the end, he says that he finally has had to come to terms with and accept his identity as a black man and the role that he can play in his community, and says that he is ready to emerge form hiding. (Posnock, 2005).
