Wachtel's essay "Talking About Racism: How Our Dialogue Gets Short-Circuited" claims that racial problems are caused by whites not being willing to hear and resolve concerns of blacks.
hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.' The first is most appropriate to use for my purposes, as it most general, and defines what i ill be analyzing....
Racism can be dated back to the time of slavery and while it is true that slavery is over, many decisions today are still made based on the color of one’s skin.
According to Merriam Dictionary, racism is “a belief that is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race.” Every day, many people experience the harsh act of racism in different forms such as: racial slurs, harassment, or through more obvious acts which are the effects of institutional racist practices.
However, the subject of Black racism should be discussed. A functional definition of racism could be "the oppression and exploitation of people because of their race.” Using this definition, it is very clear that at this point in time Blacks cannot be racists because of their lack of power to oppress anybody (Whites, Indians, Chinese, etc.). Black intellectual enlightenment does not always lead to genuine insight and it can be very damaging to the intellect as reflected by the behavior and attitudes of many eminent Black scientists. For example, Dr. Kenneth B. Clark(1968) has spent his life making a fortune studying the victims of White oppression-his own people-and now speaks of the irrelevancy of color. Dr. Alvin Poussaint (1972, 1974), who seems to be Johnson Publishing Company’s psychiatrist-in-residence, ignores the widespread genocidal programs directed against Blacks and writes such trivia as "The Difference Between Sex and Love," "Blacks and Iews-An Appeal for Unity," and "Why Blacks Kill Blacks.”
Elite private colleges are ideologically homogenous because they are socially homogeneous, or close to it. Their student populations largely come from the liberal upper and upper-middle classes, multiracial but predominantly white, with an admixture of students from poor communities of color—two demographics with broadly similar political beliefs, as evidenced by the fact that they together constitute a large proportion of the Democratic Party base. As for faculty and managerial staff, they are even more homogenous than their students, both in their social origins and in their present milieu, which tends to be composed exclusively of other liberal professionals—if not, indeed, of other liberal academics. Unlike the campus protesters of the 1960s, today’s student activists are not expressing countercultural views. They are expressing the exact views of the culture in which they find themselves (a reason that administrators prove so ready to accede to their demands). If you want to find the counterculture on today’s elite college campuses, you need to look for the conservative students.
Many but not all of the ills that have afflicted humanity in recent centuries including imperialism, anti-Semitism, racism, industrial slavery and apartheid were developed in Christian societies well before evolutionary biology, and subsequently contaminated the scientific thinking developed in the Christian west. Racial bondage was developed and defended in the American colonies largely by Protestants, who then constructed the Jim Crow apartheid culture in which torturous lynchings were a weekly popular spectacle – all the states with laws against teaching evolution were lynching states. Some of the same states also passed eugenics laws that were widely approved by Protestants on both sides of the Atlantic. An invention of the Catholic church, anti-Semitism was further developed by Martin Luther and American theocons such as Henry Ford. These opinions and actions inspired Hitler, who felt he was doing the work of the Christo-Aryan God.
Although religion has its dark side, it is not at fault for all human ills. An example, suicide bombing as a form of anti-civilian terror was initiated in the 1970s by the Tamil Tiger rebels of Sri Lanka who were not theistic in doctrine. The tactic was subsequently adopted by Islamic extremists.
Although scientific research by myself and others (Zuckerman, Rees, Norris, Inglehart and Bruce among them) are solving many of the questions surrounding belief and nonbelief in the supernatural, many questions remain. Such as why a large minority of well-educated, science oriented persons with secure incomes continue to ardently believe in deities despite the lack of compelling evidence? - G.S. Paul
Instead, Shelby argues that racism is based on the effect of a person’s actions on deepening racist institutions or promulgating the oppression of a particular group of people based on their race.
Scientists agree that there is no science without classification. For the disciplines of psychology and medicine, it is not necessary for labels and diagnoses to have concrete reality, i.e., they can be retained if they are useful in understanding and treating disease. For example, the majority of patients who are admitted or committed to mental hospitals in this country are diagnosed as being schizophrenic, although there is no general agreement among psychiatrists and psychologists on the definition of schizophrenia. However, even though it is not required, this presentation does have ”concrete reality,” namely, Europeans’ behavior and attitudes toward Blacks. Behavioral scientists generally agree that the outstanding characteristics of the psychopathic personality are the almost complete absence of ethical or moral development and an almost total disregard for appropriate patterns of behavior. This characteristic has led to a misunderstanding of the psychopath as someone who does not know the difference between right and wrong. This belief is not true; psychopaths simply ignore the concept of right and wrong. By ignoring this trait in the White race (the lack of ethical and moral development) Blacks have made and are still making a tragic mistake in basing the worldwide Black liberation movement on moral suasion. It is pathological for Blacks to keep attempting to use moral suasion on a people who have no morality where race is the variable.
Judith Ortiz Cofer tells in her essay, “The Myth of the Latin Woman”, what it is like growing up a Puerto Rican woman in white America, also that one does not need violence or cruelty to overcome racism and stereotypes or to gain equalit...
It is, in fact, the ever-shifting pattern of alliances, invasions, migrations, intermarriages and cross-cultural fusions that makes the whole concept of scientifically categorized "races" scientifically suspect and, increasingly, outright rejected.
