The Hunger Games essays are academic essays for citation. These papers were written primarily by students and provide critical analysis of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.
You make a statement like, "The Hunger Games is so much better than Twilight." The ornery person says, "Prove it." So you talk about the depth of the characters in both books, how Twilight appeals mostly to teenage girls and The Hunger Games appeals to both genders, and how The Hunger Games contains more literary elements and social criticism, and is therefore of more value to society.
Questions to ask yourself:
• Does it show my ability to think critically about the subject?
"What I am going to tell you about today is that strong thesis sentences make good papers."
"A strong thesis statement is the pinnacle of a coherent, well-written essay, and for many student writers can make or break their research papers."
The second thesis statement is the better of the two.
(A conversation with an ornery person might end with you punching them in the face after they say "prove it" too many times; in an essay you have to punch your reader in the face with how smart you are.)
Here are some ways to make your thesis statements stronger (WRITE THESE DOWN):
Say why we should care.
"Students looking for an enjoyable young adult novel that will also improve their minds should choose The Hunger Games series over the Twilight series, because The Hunger Games has more literary value than Twilight."
"The Hunger Games is a better book than Twilight because The Hunger Games contains deeper characters, stronger literary elements, and social criticism relevant to today's youth."
"The Hunger Games is a better book than Twilight because Katniss Everdeen is a strong female role model coping with the loss of her loved ones in a dystopian society; whereas Bella Swan is an unrelatable, unrealistic, wooden character with almost no personality flaws."
Make specific comparisons.
"The Hunger Games is a better book than Twilight because the Hunger Games' theme is one of social criticism, whereas Twilight's only apparent message is that vampires are sexy."
Make an evaluation.
Consider the consequences.
"If young people continue to choose Twilight over the Hunger Games, not only will The Hunger Games' criticism of violent entertainment addiction go unnoticed, but Twilight's glorification of unhealthy, parasitic relationships may cause young, impressionable readers to make bad decisions when dating."
"The Hunger Games is a better book than Twilight because--where The Hunger Games satirizes how modern society is addicted entertainment and desensitized to violence--Twilight makes no social commentary, glorifies unhealthy, parasitic relationships, and is therefore not as relevant to literature.
Apply previous knowledge.
"The Hunger Games is a better book than Twilight because The Hunger Games draws much from its prestigious predecessors in the literary canon, such as 1984, Brave New World, and Battle Royale, whereas Twilight does little to live up to its Gothic genre."
